Terrible failures in a society where greed is really, really good, they are full of despai. Hou's examination of four damaged lives moving from one get-rich-quick scheme to another has the external grip of a noir movie and the inffable pull of poetry. Lim Giong's soundrack, with a rough and tumble Taiwan flavor, helps drenched the movie in spooly ennui.
